The agency offers hours-of-service waivers to commercial drivers impacted by reroutes.
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMSCA) extended its emergency declaration for operations around Baltimore’s collapsed Francis Scott Key Bridge last week. This decision allows commercial drivers to continue waiving federally required drive time limits, providing permission to use extra time at unusual hours to navigate the many reroutes around the nearby Port of Baltimore.
The Baltimore bridge collapsed three weeks ago after a cargo ship collided with a support pillar. This caused the majority of marine access to the busy Port of Baltimore to be shut down, as well as cutting off highway traffic across the span.
The FMCSA stated, “The Port of Baltimore remains open for truck transactions. Vessel (waterway) traffic into and out of the Port of Baltimore is suspended until further notice.”
